The Edmonton Oilers have signed their man – and no, it’s not Taylor Hall or Tyler Sequin.
Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson, Edmonton’s first-round selection in last year’s NHL entry draft, agreed to a three-year contract Tuesday, assuring the 19-year-old left winger will be at training camp this September.
Paajarvi-Svensson spent this past season with Timra IK of the Swedish Elite League and scored 12 goals and 17 assists in 49 games.
Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said in a news release: “This is an exciting day for the Oilers organization. In signing his first NHL contract, Magnus has demonstrated through his junior and pro career with Team Sweden that he is an explosive player who exhibits great determination going to the net. We look forward to seeing him at his first NHL training camp this fall.”
The 6-foot-2, 201-pound Paajarvi-Svensson was the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft and played at the 2010 world championship where Sweden won the bronze medal. He also competed at the 2008 and 2009 world juniors and won a silver medal both times.
The Oilers hold the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NHL draft and have not said which player they favour – Hall, from the Windsor Spitfires, or Seguin, from the Plymouth Whalers. Seguin was rated the top prospect by the Central Scouting Bureau and plays centre, a position where the Oilers need immediate help.

The results mean the Oilers will select first in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and will have the luxury of deciding whether to take Taylor Hall of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires or Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers.

Khabibulin you should know better!
Injured Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin faces DUI and speeding charges after being arrested in Arizona.
Khabibulin, 37, was pulled over in a black Ferrari early on Feb. 8, after a Scottsdale police officer clocked him at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to the arrest report.
“I had one glass (of wine),” Khabibulin told arresting officer B. Patterson, who noted in his report that Khabibulin’s eyes were bloodshot and watering, and that he smelled moderately of alcohol and spoke slowly.
The traffic stop was made at 12:37 a.m. in a residential area of Paradise Valley, an affluent town just northwest of Scottsdale.
The officer asked Khabibulin if he knew why he was pulled over and he replied, “Speed.”
Khabibulin, who said he was going 80 mph and later failed to produce proof of insurance, agreed to a field sobriety test.
He was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. and booked into a district jail.
